The Anzac "A"

Every soldier who landed or served in Galliopi between 25 April 1915 and the evacuation in December 1915 was awarded a small stamped brass or bullion embroidered capital "A" to wear centered on his unit patches. It was a mark of distinction for service in that awful, bloody campaign. It was also the only campaign decoration awarded for Gallipoli, for the British government never saw fit to issue a campaign ribbon for the Dardenelles.

Our unit continues this tradition. When the unit was formed we decided that the original members, and anyone who joined in our first year would be awarded the ANZAC "A". Most of our original members have moved on to other units. There are now only three members authorized to wear the "A". For a 1918 impression this is a very authentic ratio, as most of the Gallipoli vets died fighting or were invalided home.

We have added a new tradition in the unit:  If you have 10 years service or 20 events as a member of the 5th Battalion you can petition to have you "A" awarded.  The Award committee consists of the members with an "A".  Contact the Unit CO for more details.
